People who practice Cognitive Behavioral Theapy are called behaviorists and believe that behavior is learned and can be unlearned.  Behaviorists use techniques to help a person change their thinking so that their behavior changes, or sometimes they help a person change their behaving so that their thinking changes.

CBT is generally recognized as the most effective therapy and is the one most prescribed by insurance companies.   During CBT you may be asked to read a book, watch a movie, try a new behavior, follow a checklist - all custom designed to change the thinking and behaving that underlie the problem.

Dr. Wayne Dyer often says. "If you change the way you look at things - the things you look at change".  This is a good summation of how CBT works.
